Can Kratom Cause False Positive Drug Tests?

Kratom is a fantastic choice for calming the mind, boosting productivity, or escaping stress throughout the course of the day. However, if you have to take drug tests for work, probation, or other reasons, you may be concerned about taking such a beneficial plant.

Before we look at whether kratom can cause a false positive on a drug test and how you can avoid that unlikely positive result, what is a false positive?

What is a False Positive Drug Test?

A false positive drug test is one that shows the presence of a particular substance in urine, hair, or saliva. This means that you would fail the drug test for a drug, medication, or any other substance even though you never took that substance in the first place.

It can be difficult to explain away a false positive drug test and hard to prove, but knowing some of the common medicines, foods, and supplements that are known to cause false positives is an excellent first step. In addition, you should always ask for further lab testing to find out if the false positive was indeed a false result.

What Can Cause a False Positive?

There are many things that can cause a false positive. For example, poppy seeds come front the opium poppy and can cause a positive test result for opiates like codeine and morphine. Even mouthwashes can trigger a positive alcohol result, either in your breath, blood, or urine.

Coca tea, a popular medicinal tea in Peru, is made from the leaves of the coca plant, where cocaine comes from, and can cause a failed drug test as well. Even OTC medicines can cause a false positive in some cases including diphenhydramine, found in Benedryl and Advil PM, which can show up as methadone or PCP. In addition, legal Delta-8 THC products can also make you fail a cannabis drug test and it will be impossible for the tester to determine if you used legal or illegal cannabis products.

As you can see, there are lots of substances that can trigger a false positive drug test result and it can be hard to avoid all of them. However, if possible it’s best to try because a positive, even a false one, can be stressful and cost you your job or even your freedom.

So what about kratom?

Can Kratom Cause a False Positive Drug Test?

Unfortunately, kratom can cause a false positive drug test. The good news? It’s quite uncommon and can be refuted via in-depth laboratory testing. However, to prepare, it’s good to know what kratom can cause a false positive for, right?

According to studies, kratom can cause a false positive for methadone, a medicine used to help people overcome opiate addiction. This result is corroborated by other studies as well, which means that you should be extra careful if you know you are regularly tested for methadone.

Methadone is typically not found in standard 5 or 7-panel drug tests but can be specifically requested (for example, if you are in a methadone program or for certain professions). However, a 10 and especially a 12-panel drug test is very likely to include methadone.

There are some reports of people failing for other substances, but no research to show that’s the case. Regardless, if you are worried about an upcoming drug test, then you might want to know how long before the test you might want to stop consuming kratom.

How Long Does Kratom Stay in Your System?

The amount of time that kratom stays in your system for urinalysis or another form of drug test varies greatly depending on several factors including

  • Dosage
  • Frequency of use
  • Weight
  • Metabolism
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Diet
  • Exercise
  • Potency of kratom
  • Strain
  • And more

The potency of kratom also makes a big difference in how long it might stay in your system and contribute to a false positive. In addition, some strains contain more mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, like the fermented and exceptionally powerful Red Bentuangie kratom, which means they are more likely to cause a false positive.

In addition, potent extracts contain a higher concentration of alkaloids, which means they also increase the likelihood of a false positive. Basically, they may offer a better result for relaxation or energy, but just be a little careful when it comes to taking these products right before a drug test.

However, even a single kratom dose could stay in your system for a few days. If you take kratom daily, it is best to wait at least two weeks without ingesting any kratom products. If you are still wary, then you can buy a kratom test online to test yourself just to be completely sure it’s all out of your system before your test.

Do Some Drug Tests Include Kratom?

It is possible for a drug screen to test specifically for kratom, but it is still rare because kratom is typically not a concern. However, some corrections programs, drug rehabs, and other organizations may include a kratom drug test. If this is the case, then you will fail because of the kratom you ingest, not because of a false positive. If a drug test is for an employer, then you probably don’t need to worry at all about testing for kratom…so go ahead and buy yourself a new batch of Green Borneo kratom!

Conclusion

Kratom offers tons of great benefits… some people use it to get a burst of helpful energy while others use it for relaxation and discomfort. Whatever the reason, if you are dreading an upcoming drug test, remember that kratom can cause a false positive for methadone. While unlikely, it probably isn’t worth missing out on a job opportunity or having to explain your situation to a boss, probation officer, or anyone else.
