You want the best kratom, right? Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to know how to tell good kratom from bad kratom. That’s because there are a lot of different factors. While the vendor makes a huge difference, there are other ways to tell between different batches, even if they come from the same vendor or farm.
But first, it may not be totally apparent why it’s so important to get high-quality, powerful kratom.
Why is Kratom Potency So Important?
There are several reasons why the quality and potency of kratom should be a major concern for you, regardless of whether you are a new kratom user or a long-term user.
Benefits
There are a lot of reasons to take kratom. It can give you energy, relax the body and mind, relieve discomfort and tension, and much more. However, the potency of kratom can significantly impact the benefits of a specific strain or batch. The weakest batches I’ve ever had don’t offer much benefit at all, but even the middle-quality options will be missing one or more of the benefits, usually, the relaxation and mood lift.
Why do you think this is? It’s probably because the wide range of kratom qualities we know and love comes from the unique mixture of numerous alkaloids, but low-quality kratom has less than one or more of these alkaloids. This leads to worsened, weakened effects.
Side Effects
Lower-quality kratom tends to produce more side effects like nausea, dizziness, brain fog, fatigue, and more. Some weak kratom batches are adulterated and can cause side effects not usually caused by kratom like jitters. If they have heavy metals, bacteria, and other contaminants, the side effects could be even more serious.
However, even pure kratom that is of lower quality is more likely to cause side effects for a number of reasons. One of the reasons we will discuss with dose, but others include an imbalance between the alkaloids you want, like mitragynine, and those that you don’t really want.
Dose
With low-quality kratom, you will have to take a larger dose than you would need with a powerful strain like high-quality Green Maeng Da Kratom. For those who hate the taste of kratom, that sounds terrible. Even if you don’t mind taking kratom, either as a tea or toss and wash, taking more powder is not appealing. It can increase the risk of nausea and other minor side effects simply because you are ingesting lots of dry plant matter.
How to Tell Kratom Potency
Determining the potency of kratom is far from an exact science and the only ways to truly tell are through lab testing and personal use. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some signs that are indicative of great, or poor, kratom quality.
Vendor
Knowing that a kratom vendor has a great reputation is one of the easiest ways to tell about kratom quality. Sure, their batches may change potency some, but in general, a good vendor is a good vendor and a bad vendor is a bad vendor. Furthermore, gas station kratom is typically lower quality than you can find with specialty shops online.
How can you find a good vendor? Well, the best way is to test and try for yourself, but that takes time and money, so we recommend looking at reviews just like you would do with any other type of business.
Smell and Taste
Most people don’t like the taste and smell of kratom, but it can be a great way to estimate its potency. First, let’s discuss smell. The best kratom usually has a strong aroma that many liken to freshly cut grass, green tea, or floral gardens. Now, that may sound more pleasant than the scent of most kratom, but it should give you a good idea of what to look for. Low-quality kratom is more likely to smell like dirt or sand (or lack an aroma altogether).
Taste goes along with the smell, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind. One, even though you may dislike the taste, a powerful taste can be indicative of high concentrations of those wonderful alkaloids you crave. Two, bitterness is usually a sign of beneficial compounds found in the leaf.
Color and Strain
The color of a kratom batch is a good way to tell the freshness and potency, but there is one caveat: the strain and drying process can greatly influence the color regardless of quality. While all kratom strains are typically hues of green, red, and yellow strains, particularly fermented strains like Red Bentuangie, have a warmer tint that, in some cases, nears red, orange, tan, or yellow completely. So keep this in mind when checking out the color.
That being said, bright colors, vivid greens, and uniform colors are all good signs when it comes to high-quality kratom. This is especially true if it’s combined with a fresh taste and smell.
Lab Tests
Lab tests are the only way to see the percentage of particular alkaloids found in each batch, but it doesn’t even have to be that complex. High-quality vendors use lab tests to eliminate the risk of bacteria and heavy metals found in their kratom and will share those tests with you so you can have peace of mind knowing that you are getting exceptional kratom. Third-party tests will typically examine physical properties, test for e. Coli, salmonella, yeast, mold, arsenic, lead, and more.
