Can Kratom Be Prescribed?

Kratom is a controversial plant…and that’s putting it mildly. Despite the controversy, millions of people around the country and world use it for health benefits and sometimes to replace more harmful medications or drugs that cause worse side effects. Because of that, you may be wondering, “Can kratom be prescribed?” since it does help people with a wide variety of ailments.

While the answer to that question is a simple “no,” it does bring up several other topics regarding the legality of kratom, what doctors say about kratom and more. Before we look at that, let’s look at its designation in the United States.

Can Kratom Be Prescribed? The FDA and Kratom

To thoroughly answer the question of prescription kratom, or the lack thereof, it’s important to investigate the relationship between the Food and Drug Administration and kratom. You see, the FDA creates rules about health supplements and drugs must be approved by the FDA before being sold as supplements, OTC medications, or prescription medications.

As of June 2023, there are no FDA-approved uses for the highly beneficial kratom plant. While they also offer warnings about the plant, they encourage more research into the plant as well it’s primary compounds mitragynine and 7-hydroxy mitragynine.

Because of this, it’s mostly up to individual states to determine if they want to allow the plant, ban it altogether, or pass regulations to protect the kratom consumer. The American Kratom Association has been working with states as well as counties and cities to implement Kratom Consumer Protection Acts.

These laws are designed to allow kratom users to still get their favorite kratom strains while also ensuring the kratom products are unadulterated, safe to consume, and not available for minors. Additionally, many of the kratom acts regulate the sale of overly powerful extracts.

We strongly suggest keeping an eye on your state and local laws to make sure you support fair kratom initiatives and oppose outright bans. Speak your voice to keep this beneficial plant available to the public without needing a prescription or risking criminal charges.

Where Is Kratom Legal without a Prescription?

Kratom legality can vary greatly from one state to the next, so it’s a good idea to list the state laws so that you can monitor and make sure that you not only don’t need a prescription but that you will not be charged with a crime for possessing your favorite Red Maeng Da Kratom tablets or White Wild Kratom powder.

Where Can You Buy Kratom OTC?

The good news now that you know the answer to, “Can kratom be prescribed?” is that you don’t have to go to a doctor to get kratom as long as you live in one of the legal states. So, where do you get high-quality kratom?

While you may be able to find it at health stores, smoke shops, or even gas stations, those products are typically overpriced, low quality, or both. Because of that, we recommend going with a store or vendor that specializes in kratom. There are plenty of these types of stores online, including Shop Ketum.

Should You Talk to a Doctor About Kratom?

Just because you can’t get kratom prescribed to you doesn’t mean you have to avoid talking to a doctor about your choice to use kratom for energy, relaxation, or other benefits. However, there are a couple of tips for doing so.

The first thing you need to consider is that not all doctors know much about kratom and some of the ones that do may not be supportive of it. That’s because there is a lot of misinformation about kratom and not enough research yet to back up your claims of the benefits you experience. For some doctors, it might make them hesitant to prescribe other medications to you.

That being said, there are plenty of doctors who also support the use of supplements, as long as you are doing so safely. Just keep in mind that your doctor may be one of the others before disclosing your kratom use.

Second, it’s always good to get a professional opinion before starting any new supplements, including kratom. In fact, we encourage it, but you also need to weigh your own pros and cons before sticking to a doctor’s opinion or advice.

Therefore, ask your doctor what they know about kratom. Some doctors are kratom users themselves and very knowledgeable about the plant while others may have very limited knowledge. If they don’t have much knowledge, then you can tell them your personal experience, hopes, and expectations and even provide them with research or articles about the benefits of the plant.
